Welcome to our FAQ section where you'll find answers to most of the common technical questions we get asked. If you just need good quality digital images for home use, we recommend that you use our FilmScanExpress  service - you'll get great images without having to worry about the technicalities. FilmScanPro users, please read on, or just contact us  regarding your requirements.

What film sizes and types do you handle? Our scanners will accept 35mm, 100, 126, 127, 120, 220 and 620 film sizes, positive or negative. 35mm negative strips of 3-6 frames are accepted. Individual cut 35 mm frames are acceptable but may be subject to an extra handling charge. We also accept 76 x 26 mm mounted slides and 16 mm film.

What scanning resolution will you use on my images?  Our standard colour scanning resolutions are  2400dpi for FilmScanExpress and up to 4000dpi for FilmScanPro. Using our Pro service, you can specify resolution and bit depth. Note that requesting 48-bit files, will double the file size.

What output file size will I get? File size will vary depending on scan resolution, film size and file format. Please click here for a chart of image file sizes for each common scanning resolution and film type.

What is Digital ICE and when do you use it?  All our scanners are equipped with Digital ICE technology from Applied Science Fiction. Unless you request otherwise, we will scan your images with this blemish and scratch removal process enabled at its normal setting. If your images are in bad condition we can apply the ICE fine setting, but the trade-off could be slight softening of image detail. You can see the effect of ICE here.

What is Digital ROC and when do you use it? If your files are old or faded, we can apply the Digital ROC process option during scanning to correct and restore image colour. This is a subjective process and our ROC sample files indicate a typical result from a 25-year-old negative. Typically, results are good but not guaranteed.

What is Digital GEM? GEM is an in-scanner post processing operation that reduces colour noise and film grain. To see the typical effect, please see our GEM sample files. The trade-off is often a slight loss in image detail. Check this option on the order form if required.

What digital file formats do you provide? We provide your FilmScanExpress images in JPG format. FilmScanPro customers can specify TIFF, EPS, PSD or other file formats in RGB or CMYK.

Why didn't you crop my scans? You ordered via FilmScanPro (or we made a mistake!). In order to capture the full frame, scanners leave a black border on your image. Using FilmScanExpress, we automatically crop your images to remove this. For FilmScanPro customers we don't, because most photographers prefer to do it themselves. Click here to see a typical example of un-cropped scanner output.

What is interpolation and do I need it? When you don't have enough pixels in your image to achieve a quality image of a given size, interpolation can be used to 'invent' pixels. The downside is that there are limits however, and greater interpolations will soften image detail. We use Genuine Fractals by onOne Software and we'd be happy to provide this custom service to your requirements.

What digital file formats do you provide? We provide your FilmScanExpress images in JPG format. FilmScanPro customers can specify TIFF, EPS, PSD or other file formats in RGB or CMYK.

What form of Colour Management do you use? We use the Adobe 1998 and sRGB colour profiles and work with Adobe 1998 by default.

How you deal with Curves, Colour Balance and Saturation? We automatically do our best to produce great images for FilmScanExpress users. For Pro customers however, we focus on delivering maximum resolution and tonal range in the belief that you will wish to make your own adjustments. If you'd like to use our Optimum service however, we’ll individually check your images at 100% for remaining blemishes and do our best to correct colour, contrast and tonal range to what we consider to be the best result.

How about image sharpening? Very simply, we don’t, unless you request it.

What image size do I need to get best quality from my colour printer? A simplistic answer to this question is the more pixels the better within reason. There are a number of variables to take into account however, not least your printer's capability and your PC's ability to handle large file sizes efficiently. For professional use, our scanners can produce file sizes of 135MB or more from a 35mm frame, but this is completely unnecessary for home printing. If you use our FilmScan Express service you'll automatically get files to produce prints up to A4 in size at 300 dpi. If you have other requirements, please consult our chart of recommended files sizes for printing, or contact us to discuss your needs.

Should I have my images on CD or DVD media? The choice is yours. We’ll deliver your images on CD (600MB) or DVD (4.7GB). Larger orders and file sizes will obviously need more disks.

Do you provide Contact Sheets? – Yes, we do, for a small incremental charge. We’ll produce high-quality contact or thumbnail sheets for your whole order upon request. Please check the contact sheet option on our order form.

Can I download my images from your Web site when my order is complete? Yes, you can. Just remember that as a rule, you'll need a high-speed Internet connection such as broadband to do this in a timely fashion. Even if you order our lowest resolution scan in JPG format, these images these files can be 4-5 MB each.

How can I safeguard my valuable negatives and slides in transit? We use a fully trackable courier service for delivery throughout New Zealand, or DHL/Fedex for international orders. You can deliver your films to us using your chosen method, but ordinary post is not recommended - we will have absolutely no way of tracing them if they don't arrive. We can also get our courier service to collect if you wish; just e-mail or call customerservice@filmscan.co.nz to let us know.
